School Uniform
At Bishop Chavasse school, every member of our school community is encouraged to feel valued and respected, and all persons are treated fairly. We believe a school uniform is important in building pupils’ sense of identity and belonging to the community of the school. It instils a sense of pride in their school, promotes the ethos of the school, and supports positive behaviour. By creating a common identity amongst all pupils, regardless of background, a school uniform acts as a social leveller, protecting pupils from social pressures whatever their race, religion, gender or background. It can reduce potential bullying and peer pressure to wear the latest fashions and expensive clothing.
We have updated our school uniform policy to include the latest statutory guidance.
We have a smart, but simple school uniform which the children wear with pride; just as we have high expectations of pupil conduct, we have high expectations that children wear their school uniform and look smart.
In Early Years we recognise that many children will have just mastered getting themselves dressed. Therefore, the uniform in Early Years is a little different to the rest of the school: polo shirts and no ties.
From Year 1 onwards, the uniform changes to include a tie for boys and girls.
Changes to Uniform Policy: 2024/25
We are making some changes to our school uniform over the coming months to support families with the cost of living, ensure uniform can be purchased easily and our children feel part of a school community. We will continue to use Paul Marchant as our recognised uniform supplier as he offers competitive prices on our logoed items: jumpers, cardigans and PE kit.
The changes to note are that:
1. We are phasing out the option for wearing blazers. While smart, the blazers come with a high cost that many families are unable to afford and we do not want any families to feel under pressure to provide a blazer that often gets taken off for the majority of the school day. A jumper with a logo is equally as smart and costs a fraction of the price of the blazer.
2. The second change is that we will be moving from black skirts, pinafores, shorts and trousers to grey. While the cost of black versus grey items is relatively comparable, we are mindful that most supermarkets and shops stock a large selection of grey items while black ones need to be ordered. A move to grey will mean we reduce the need to pay delivery charges on uniform but also ensure that should you need to suddenly pick up a skirt or pair of trousers, it is easy to do so, at your convenience, around long working hours.
This change is a phased one. Many families will have blazers and black uniform that still fits and can be used by siblings and we do not want families to go out and replace uniform they already have. To support with this, the change will be gradual and so it is not until September 2025 that all children should be wearing the correct new uniform: same jumpers, shirts, ties and shoes but GREY skirts, trousers or shorts and NO BLAZER. Fully checked summer dresses and playsuits will remain the same.
