Year 3’s Weekly news

Week ending 13th December 2024

This week has been another busy one for Year three!  They have been decorating and learning about the meaning of Christingles, watching the Key stage one Nativity and working towards another big write in English!

In Reading Strands this week we have been continuing to look at developing the children’s comprehension skills as well as reviewing parts of our new book – The Wild Robot.  We have also been revising our knowledge of word classes.

In English we have used our trap designs to describe the main parts of our inventions and then to plan an explanation of why we need this trap and what this would involve.  This process involves using sub-headings and writing instructions as well as detailed descriptions.  It is a great exercise for the children as it involves so many literacy skills and they are all giving it their all!

In Maths, the children have been consolidating their knowledge of addition and subtraction by practicing their column adding and subtracting as well as other strategies.

In RE, they have been learning about the meaning of the symbols on the Jesse tree.

In RSHE, the children have been looking at friendship & compliments.  They discussed as a class about a conflict between two friends and wrote predictions and possible outcomes.

Finally, in Geography, we have now completed the last of our lessons this term.  These were on mountain ranges in the UK and the mountain of Snowdonia.  In these lessons, the children learnt about the mountain ranges of the Highlands, the Brecon Beacons, the Pennines, the Yorkshire dales.  They learnt that when climbing a mountain, climbers have to be very careful for many different reasons, and they observed the differences at contrasting heights.

Week ending 6th December 2024

It's already starting to feel like Christmas in Year 3 as we have begun counting down to  Christmas with our advent calendars.  Christmas trees are up around the school and we have our school Christmas fair to look forward to today!

In English we have started a new focus for our writing - designing a trap for the Iron man!  This has been extremely exciting for the children and they have used their imaginations to design some amazing contraptions in order to capture this destructive giant!

At the end of last week, the children also wrote out their 'threat narrative's' out in neat and I was incredibly impressed with their efforts - not only with their handwriting but also with their ability to apply what they have been taught in class.  Their work will be going up in classrooms next week and we will put a picture of their amazing work on the website for you to see.

In Geography we have continued to learn more about mountains, this time looking at what Valley's are and why people might visit mountains.  We also looked at the Mountain range of The Andes and looked at where this was in South America.

In Art, we designed our own masks and practised outlining and shading in pen to experiment with different techniques.

In Latin we have been translating English sentences involving describing animals.  I was so impressed with the children's efforts.

In Reading Strands we have been practising our skills of comprehension, identifying different word classes and comparing the characters of Roz and The Iron man to each other.  It's lovely to see how much the children are enjoying both books and I hope they are inspired to try new books in the future.

In Maths this week we have been spent on consolidating the children's knowledge of either the 2x, 4x, 8x or a combination of all three, depending on how confidently they have been working on these.

Finally, we have continued to look at The Trinity in RE and they have looked to try and evaluate their understanding of the trinity by naming the three parts of it and explaining how God can be seen by Christians.

Week ending 29th November

This week the children have been working super hard to complete their Threat narrative stories around the Iron man and we are looking forward to showing you the pictures of these next week once they are all finished in neat.

In Reading Strands the children have started a new book called The Wild Robot and have been introduced to a new Robot called Roz.  She is much friendlier than the Iron man and we are enjoying getting into the story and using our reading skills to understand the text and complete activities based on it.  I was particularly impressed with their cartoon strips and their full sentence answers this week – they really tried hard with this!

In History the children have been learning the story about Gilgamesh and The cradles of civilisations.  In Re they have been learning about the Trinity and how Christians see God as three in one!

At the end of last week the children started drawing faces using charcoal and this week they were given the opportunity of finishing them and they look amazing We will be putting them up on display soon!

We hope you and the children have an amazing weekend

Best Wishes

Year 3's news - Week ending 22nd November 2024

This week has been our anti-bullying week and we have been focusing on making the right decisions and being the best individuals we can be.  On Monday we had a special assembly led by our very own Mrs Taylor, followed by an assembly on Wednesday when we watched a video from the NSPCC on anti-bullying.  On Thursday we had a class worship where we learnt how to be good friends and include others.  As well as these important lessons we have had individual photos taken (and with our brothers & sisters) and had the fun of dressing in our own clothes on Friday!

In English this week we have worked hard to build on our knowledge of our vehicle text - The Iron man- and we have written character descriptions as well as planning our 'big write' - 'An approaching threat narrative'.  We have been learning about different literacy devices like similes and have been developing our use of adjectives, verbs and adverbs to extend our sentences and inject interest into our writing.

Year 3's news - Week ending 8th November 2024

This week in Year 3, a shocking discovery kicked off our new writing topic in English.

The children returned from break time to discovery a strange collection of metallic objects had been scattered around the classroom. After much debate, it was decided that our visitor must be sending us a message! Then were then introduced to our new vehicle text for this half term – The Iron Man.

The children have been engaged in writing setting and character descriptions, as well as a kenning poem about the Iron Man.

The children were hooked by their new science topic – Light!

We carried out experiments to investigate whether we can see objects with varying amounts of light. The children were fantastic scientists and conducted their experiments sensibly, making accurate recordings.

We created beautiful poppies in art for our Remembrance Day display.

The children learnt about the importance of Remembrance Day and reflected on the importance of showing respect to those who protect us.

Year 3's news - Week ending 18th October 2024

Year 3 are incredibly proud of the amazing work that we have produced this week. In English, we have been extending our writing with adjectives, prepositions and adverbs. The children have produced detailed descriptions as part of their Egyptian narrative writing.

In Maths, we have been  learning the column addition and subtraction method. The children have produced wonderfully presented equations and worked hard to solve problems involving 3-digit numbers.

We have extended our understanding of Ancient Egypt, looking at how the pyramids changed, a variety of Gods, and understanding mummification.

Year 3's news - Week ending 11th October 2024

This week got off to a busy start with our harvest festival and we were very proud of the children for reciting their harvest festival poem in front of the school at St Stephens Church.

In Reading Strands this week we have been particularly impressed by the children’s efforts with their reviewing skills.  Their handwriting has also been showing some good progress and it's been so lovely to see the care that they have been taking to concentrate on their presentation!

In English we continued to look at the book ‘Egyptology’ but the focus for the remainder of this term is diary writing so the children have been busy delving into the world of being an archeologist and discovering a valuable artefact!  Whilst doing this we have been building in some important reminders of using adverbs, prepositions and word families within our grammar work.

In History, we have been discovering what the ancient Egyptians believed about death and the process of mummification.  This work is not for the faint hearted!

In RE we have been looking at the figure-Abraham, and his importance in the bible.  Questions raised in this lesson reflected how much the children were intrigued by some questions that were raised at the time Abraham was living, and we enjoyed a good discussion about ‘having the right answer’.

In Geography the children have drawn their own meander of a river and learnt about how Rivers shape the land.

An exciting and full week all in all and we have some pictures below of the children’s great work using adverbs this week.

Year 3's news - Week ending 4th October 2024

This week has been another busy one for Year 3.  In English the children have been busy finishing, editing & improving and writing their Egyptian narratives in neat, and we have now displayed these on our ‘wow walls’ outside both 3A and 3LT’s classrooms.  We have finished the week by looking in more detail at including prepositions and adverbs in our sentences, improving the composition and depth of these.  In Math's we have been developing our knowledge of Place Value by looking at relationships between numbers and what happens when we add 1/ 10/ 100-to-three-digit numbers.

This week has seen the start of the children looking at Egyptian masks and designing their own.  We were particularly impressed with the detail in these and will be using our boards in class to show these off.  In Geography, the children learnt about the River Seven and where it is in England.  The children are enjoying recalling Latin greetings and have been building on this ancient language by learning some traditional boys' and girls’ names.  The children have been continuing to look how different rocks are formed in Science, and, in RE, we have been looking at promises that Christians might make: both at a wedding and when deciding to enter this faith.

Year 3's news - W/e 27th September 2024

This week, the children in Year 3 have been extending their writing skills by planning and writing their own narratives.  They have been putting themselves in the role of an ancient Egyptian traveller who encounters a pyramid and finds themselves involved in a disaster.  Today (Friday) they will be starting to write their stories, and we are looking to get them up on display to share with you next week once they are completed.  In Math’s, our topic of Place Value has continued, and we have been looking at numbers up to 1,000 on a number line, their position, and comparing and ordering numbers by using Place Value.  In Reading Strands our adventures with Marcy and Arthur continue and the children are really becoming immersed in this story and learning some of the gods and goddesses’ names through the story.  The work we do in Reading Strands involves comprehension as well as recalling details through other activities so if you have any opportunities to ask questions about the book your child is reading over the weekend then please do explore this activity as it really helps them to retain information from the text.  In our topic work we have enjoyed learning greetings in Latin; understanding the water cycle in Geography; how Egypt has changed over time in History, and learning about the ways Christians show that they care about the World in Religious Education.

Early bird and intervention / extension groups have begun and we appreciate the effort made by parents to get the children in on time for these.  We will endeavor to ensure we are there on time to greet the children, and we apologise for delays that were encountered this week while we got these groups up and running.  We will be sending out more emails on Monday to let you know of any amendments we have made to these groups now we have the first week completed.

With best wishes
